Exploration Topic: Our Impact

Essential Question: How do my actions impact growth and change?

Focus Area: Change

Weekly Focus:  Self

How am I helping the children notice and explore ways they may change (e.g., emotions, preferences, hunger)?

How am I helping the children explore the ways they can cause change (e.g., color mixing, states of matter, another child’s feelings)?

What materials can I provide to support this exploration?

Focused Learning Activity for The Week:

Students will be encouraged to join the teacher in the science area. With this activity, children will have the opportunity to better understand how things change throughout the time, ways they may change. The teacher will show children the book Llama Llama Mad at Mama by Anna Dewdney where children could see how the main character changes from happy to mad. Children could distinguish the state of matter. What differences can you notice when you are happy and when you are sad? Tell me more? What does it mean to change? Tell me more about it?

Students that need extra support: Will be given prompting answers and asked children What does it mean to change? For example, "The teacher will invite children to sit in the science area, and she will show children the book making faces, with this book children can notice the different states children show in this book. Then the teacher will ask children What changes do you notice? The teacher will write whatever they express.

Students that are ready for a challenge: Will be prompted to use multiple sentences when responding to the question "What does it mean to change? What changes do you notice when you are happy and when you are sad?" ? Tell me more about it? Children will have the opportunity to explain what they know in long sentences; the teacher will extend the conversation and will write whatever they say.

ELL Students: Will be given the directions / questions in Spanish.  Dictation will be written in whichever language they answer.
