WEEK OF FEBRUARY 27, 2023

 

Reminders:

 

 

·       Please make sure your child has two extra changes of clothes, including underwear, tops bottoms and socks.

·       Please always make sure that your child walks into the school building with a mask

·       Drop off in the morning is between 7:45 and 8:00 am.  Dismissal is at 2:45 pm.

·       Please remember to bring back the sleeping mats to school.

 

·       March 2, 2023, Students may dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. Costume Contests -- Parents Invited. 8:30 AM - all PreK Classes.

Weekly Focus:  Building

 

 

Focused Learning Activity for The Week:

 

. Students will be encouraged to join the teacher in the science area.  The teacher will prompt the students to draw an answer to the question, "What is a construction? what we can build? What materials should we use?  the teacher will show children the book, "What to do with a Box by Jane Yolen and Chris Sheban, then the teacher will show some empty boxes of milk and some art craft materials, and she will ask children what they could make with these materials?

 

Students that need extra support: Will be given prompting answers and asked children what can we build? For example, "The teacher will invite children to sit on the science center, and she will invite children to observe the empty milk box, then the teacher will ask children What they can do a box? What they notice about it? The teacher will write whatever they express.

 

Students that are ready for a challenge: Will be prompted to use multiple sentences when responding to the question What is a construction?" What materials should we use? What do you notice about it? What can they do with a box? Children will have the opportunity to explain what they know in long sentences; the teacher will extend the conversation and will write whatever they say. The teacher will invite children to observe some empty boxes of cardboard (milk) and express their thoughts.

 

ELL Students: Will be given the directions / questions in Spanish.  Dictation will be written in whichever language they answer.

 

 

 

Foundational Text for the Week:

 

Standard Addressed: P-LIT 12. Child expresses creativity in thinking and communication.

What To Do with a Box by Jane Yolen and Chris Sheban: If you give a child a box, who can tell what will happen next?

The children in this book used the box to make many different things. What things did they make?

I wonder how the children in this book decided what to build with their box. How do you think they decided what to build?

What things could we build with one box? What if we had lots of boxes? Could

 we make other things? What could we build?

 

Learning Centers Available for the Theme:

 

Blocks- Children are encouraged to explore the block center. They will be shown a few unit blocks, shown where they can be found in the classroom, and shown how to match them to their outline in order to clean up.

 

Dramatic Play- Children are invited to explore the dramatic play area and use the props and clothing provided. Dramatic Play will be set up as a kitchen.  Teacher will introduce basic materials, how to use them, and how to put them away.

Art- Children are invited to explore the art area. They will be shown a paint container, brush, and paper. Teacher will model how to dip brush in paint and paint a few brushstrokes on paper. Students will be shown where materials can be found in the classroom and what they should do when they finish painting.

 

Science- Children will be shown a few items from a collection of natural objects. Teacher will model how students can begin to explore some of the materials. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom and how to put them away when finished.

 

Math- Children will be shown a couple of puzzles. Teacher will model how to take apart and how to put a few pieces together. Students will be shown where puzzles can be found and how to put them away.

 

Library- Students can explore books from the classroom library.

 

Writing- Students are invited to explore the materials provided in the writing center. They are encouraged to explore their name cards.

 

Sensory- Students will be shown a small amount of sand and a few toys. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom.  Students will be prompted to wash their hands before and after using the sand table.

Who Tools? by Toni Buzzeo: Six craftsmen build a house from the ground up. There are so many tools in this book. Which tools do you remember?

The book talks about lots of different people who use these tools in their jobs. What are some of these jobs?

What kind of tools do you use to help you?
