Essential Question: How do my actions impact growth and change?

Focus Area: Care

Weekly Focus:  others

Focused Learning Activity for The Week:

Students will be encouraged to join the teacher in the art area.  The teacher will prompt the students to draw an answer to the question, "How do you take care of your friends in the classroom? What things can you do to care for them? What happens if your friend gets hurt or feels sad, what can you do for them to help them feel better?

Students that need extra support: Will be given prompting answers and asked children What they can notice about things that they can do to take care of friends? For example, "The teacher will invite children to sit in the art area, and she will show children some pictures of children crying, then the teacher will ask children? What do they notice about it? What can they do to help the child feel better? The teacher will write whatever they express.

Students that are ready for a challenge: Will be prompted to use multiple sentences when responding to the question "How can you take care of others?" What things can they do to help them feel better when they feel sad? Tell me more about it? What do you notice about it? Children will have the opportunity to explain what they know in long sentences; the teacher will extend the conversation and will write whatever they say.

ELL Students: Will be given the directions / questions in Spanish.  Dictation will be written in whichever language they answer.

Foundational Text for the Week:

Standard Addressed: P-LIT 5. Child asks and answers questions about a book that is read aloud.

Please, Baby Please by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee. This book is about how adults care for a baby or young child. What are some of the things the adults do to care for the baby?

Do your grown-ups ever ask you to do some of the things we saw in this book? Which ones? What are some of the other things your grown-ups ask you to do?

The baby looks really mad when the adult says it is time to go home. Sometimes we have different ideas than the people who take care of us. Can you think of a time when someone who was taking care of you wanted you to do something you didn’t want to do? How did that make you feel?
