WEEK OF DECEMBER 18, 2022

 

Reminders:

 

·       Please make sure your child has two extra changes of clothes, including underwear, tops bottoms and socks.

·       Please always make sure that your child walks into the school building with a mask

·       Drop off in the morning is between 7:45 and 8:00 am.  Dismissal is at 2:45 pm.

·       Please remember to bring back the sleeping mats to school.

 

·       -Flu Vaccine Required for all students in PreK and Kindergarten.

Under New York State and City Health codes all PreK and Kindergarten students are required to have an annual Flu shot by December 1st.

Students will be required to remain at home until proof is provided that your child has received the Flu vaccine.

 

·       Ugly Sweater Day Contest on Thursday, December 20th

 

·       Christmas Recess 2022 Begins at Dismissal on December 21, 2022

 

·       No After School Program on December 21st!

 

·       School Resumes on Tuesday, January 3, 2023

Weekly Focus: Our physical Characteristics

 

 

 

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

 

 

 

Students will be encouraged to join the teacher in the art center.  The teacher will prompt the students to draw an answer to the question, "What they can notice about their physical characteristics? What physical characteristics are similar to their friends? and why? What are Different? Why?

 

Students that need extra support: Will be given prompting answers and asked children what they can notice about their physical characteristics? For example, "The teacher will invite children to sit on the art table, and she will show the emotion dolls. These dolls show. These dolls will help children to visualize the doll physical characteristics and similarities and differences. The teacher will ask children what they can notice about their physical characteristics? The teacher will write whatever they express.

 

Students that are ready for a challenge: Will be prompted to use multiple sentences when responding to the question What they can notice about their physical characteristics?" What do you notice about it? What characteristics are similar with your friends? which one are different? Children will have the opportunity to explain what they know in long sentences; the teacher will extend the conversation and will write whatever they say. The teacher will invite children to mix colors children and ask what new color they made.

 

 

ELL Students: Will be given the directions / questions in Spanish.  Dictation will be written in whichever language they answer.

 

 

Foundational Text for the Week:

 

Standard Addressed: P-SE 9. Child recognizes self as a unique individual having own abilities, characteristics, emotions, and interests.

 

WEEKLY FOUNDATIONAL TEXT:

 

Different? Same! by Heather Tekavec: Take a look at several characteristics that highlight how there can be both differences and similarities within a group.

There are lots of animals in this book such as birds, insects, fish, and reptiles. Animals can all look very different and have some things that are similar, or even the same. Let's look at the first page. What makes the tiger and the zebra similar?

Let's turn the page. What makes the tiger and the dog similar?

What are some things that make you the same as your friends in 3-K? What are some things that make you different?

 

Learning Centers Available for the Theme:

 

Blocks- Children are encouraged to explore the block center. They will be shown a few unit blocks, shown where they can be found in the classroom, and shown how to match them to their outline in order to clean up.

 

Dramatic Play- Children are invited to explore the dramatic play area and use the props and clothing provided. Dramatic Play will be set up as a kitchen.  Teacher will introduce basic materials, how to use them, and how to put them away.

Art- Children are invited to explore the art area. They will be shown a paint container, brush, and paper. Teacher will model how to dip brush in paint and paint a few brushstrokes on paper. Students will be shown where materials can be found in the classroom and what they should do when they finish painting.

 

Science- Children will be shown a few items from a collection of natural objects. Teacher will model how students can begin to explore some of the materials. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom and how to put them away when finished.

 

Math- Children will be shown a couple of puzzles. Teacher will model how to take apart and how to put a few pieces together. Students will be shown where puzzles can be found and how to put them away.

 

Library- Students can explore books from the classroom library.

 

Writing- Students are invited to explore the materials provided in the writing center. They are encouraged to explore their name cards.

 

Sensory- Students will be shown a small amount of sand and a few toys. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom.  Students will be prompted to wash their hands before and after using the sand table.
